Chris Lane
Chris
Lane is corporate Director of Environmental Affairs for Xanterra Parks & Resorts, the country's largest national park concessioner,
operating lodges, restaurants and other concessions at Yellowstone, the North and South Rims of Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion,
Crater Lake, Petrified Forest, Everglades, Mount Rushmore, and Death Valley National Parks, seven Ohio State Parks and several private
resorts. Lane is responsible for developing and implementing strategic company-wide environmental management systems that include
energy, water, solid waste, and hazardous waste management, sustainable design and construction, "green" procurement, and compliance
with federal and state environmental regulations. Lane's work at Xanterra has included developing ISO 14001 certified environmental
management systems, designing US Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified "green"
buildings, creating the concession industry's first sustainability report, implementing green business operations, installing energy
efficiency measures, and conducting environmental training.
Through Lane's programs, Xanterra won the Department of Interior 2001 and 2002 Environment Achievement Awards, the 2002 Environmental
Protection Agency's Region 9 Environmental Achievement Award for business, 2003 Arizona Preservation Award, and the 2001 Travel Industry
Association Odyssey Award for Environment.
Prior to joining Xanterra, Lane was with Aspen Skiing Company (ASC) as Director of Environmental Affairs. While in Aspen, Lane
received more than 15 national and international awards, including the British Airways Tourism for Tomorrow Award, the 1999 and 2000
Golden Eagle Awards - the highest environmental award in the ski industry, and the 2000 "U.S. Congressional Record Award" for Innovative
Environmental Programs. In 1999, Lane pioneered the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED program, helping ASC build one of the first ten
certified green buildings in the U.S.
In addition to his experience with Aspen Skiing Company, Lane was executive director of the Environmental Foundation, a non-profit
organization providing assistance to initiatives that protect and enhance environmental quality in Colorado. He was a member of the
National Ski Area Association Environment Committee and the Roaring Fork Conservancy. Lane served as elected official on the Town of
Basalt city council as well.
Prior to the resort and ski industry, Lane was project director for a regional rail transit and land conservation project, Program
Director for the Sierra Club, and an environmental consultant at IRT Environment Inc. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in
environmental engineering from the University of Florida.
