The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Rebuild America Program works to develop and support community partnerships and assist them in meeting goals to increase the energy efficiency of commercial and public buildings. The program works with these partnerships to identify technical and planning expertise, information resources on new technologies, and financing for construction and rehab projects. Benefits of the program include improved building performance, cost savings, promotion of economic growth, and environmental protection.
Virginia Sustainable Building Network (VSBN) and the Rebuild Virginia Program have engaged 36 partnerships around the state since 2001. During 2005 the Rebuild Virginia Program will focus on K-12 Schools, Colleges and Universities, Local Governments, and other Commercial Buildings. To enhance this program's effectiveness, VSBN is partnering with state agencies, including the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy (DMME), Virginia Department of Education, and Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, and with other initiatives such as the Association of Energy Conservation Professionals, the Main Street Program, and the Environmental Management Assistance Program.
This year's priorities for the Rebuild Virginia program include:
| |
Identify new partnerships and work with existing partners to help them benefit from technical and information resources at the state, regional, and national levels;
| |
Assist communities, businesses, and organizations in connecting with available state and private funding and information resources for energy-efficient renovations, high performance design, and redevelopment efforts;
| |
Provide technical training and workshops for local governments, facility managers, and school/university officials to build statewide capacity to increase energy efficiency in new and existing buildings.
Beginning in early 2001, VSBN was designated by the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy as the Virginia Rebuild America Program Representative. The U.S. DOE Rebuild America Program is a growing network of community-driven voluntary partnerships that foster energy efficiency and renewable energy in commercial, government, and institutional buildings. At the federal level, it is the largest technology deployment program within DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. Rebuild America works with K-12 school partnerships through the EnergySmart Schools program. The program's goals are to conserve energy, accelerate use of the best energy technologies, save money, reduce air pollution, lower U.S. reliance on energy imports, help revitalize aging neighborhoods, and create "smart energy" jobs.
